Hartington is taking steps to meet its growing housing needs with the launch of a new residential project. Earlier this month, city and state leaders joined developers to break ground on the Nordby Housing Project, making a significant milestone in the community’s efforts to expand housing options.

The development will include 12 rent-to-own homes near Highway 84 on the east side of Hartington. The agreement is with Omaha-based Foundations Development LLC, a company that specializes in affordable and senior housing.
Foundations Development LLC worked with the City of Hartington, Nebraska Department of Economic Development, and Nebraska Investment Authority to help secure the necessary financing and tax credits needed to get shovels in the ground.
Each home will be approximately 1,580 square feet and feature four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two-car garages, all-electric, and all appliances included.
All 12 units will be affordable and available to families earning 60 percent or less of the median income for Cedar County.
Thomas Judds of Foundations Development LLC said, “There has been a strong interest from families looking to move into these homes. Many not originally from Hartington-they are coming from outside the community as well, including Yankton, Sioux City, Sioux Falls.”
Miranda Becker, Hartington Economic Development Coordinator noted that the response has been very positive. “There has been no advertising, people are just noticing the activity that is happening in Hartington!”
Judds commented, “The community has truly embraced this development. Foundations Development LLC have done several projects, and Hartington has been very supportive of this project!”
The construction on the homes is already underway, with a completion deadline set for mid-November.
Hartington is a retail-served customer of Nebraska Public Power District.
