In October, we celebrate U.S. Manufacturing Month and the importance of U.S. manufacturing innovation. Manufacturing month honors the success of manufacturers who export and encourages other manufacturers in the U.S. to start or expand their foreign sales. It contributes $2.65 trillion to the U.S. economy, employs nearly 13 million American workers, and accounts for 10.3 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Manufacturing Day (MFG DAY) is an annual event that occurs on the first Friday of October, which will be held on October 4th in 2024. It provides manufacturers an opportunity to inspire the next generation by showcasing modern technology and careers.
The theme for 2024, “Inspire the Next Generation of Manufacturing,” aligns perfectly with the goal of encouraging younger individuals to explore careers in this innovative and essential industry.
Manufacturing is a $19 billion industry in Nebraska and is Nebraska’s largest industry. More than 100,000 people are employed in more than 2,000 manufacturing facilities. The state exports more than $7 billion in manufactured goods each year.
Manufacturing is one of Nebraska’s largest economic sectors, contributing billions to the state’s GDP. It provides high-paying jobs and is crucial for the state’s export activities. The sector supports a wide range of ancillary services, including logistics, maintenance, and supply chain management, further bolstering the state’s economy.
NPPD Economic Consultant, Rick Nelsen said, “The manufacturing sector is a vital cog in Nebraska’s economy. The ability to process our agricultural products and produce ag-related equipment creates a strong connection to our ag economy as well. Most people, even residents, are surprised by the breadth of products made in Nebraska. NPPD is proud to salute all manufacturers across the state.”
Nebraska’s manufacturers are increasingly adopting advanced technologies such as automation, robotics, and working to improve efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness. Collaboration with research institutions, such as the University of Nebraska, fosters innovation and technological advancement in the sector.
The University of Nebraska’s Nebraska Innovation Campus (NIC) is connecting the talents of experts, companies, and the university to create a unique culture of innovation. NIC is a research campus designed to facilitate new and in-depth partnerships between the University of Nebraska and private-sector businesses. NIC is adjacent to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and strategically provides access to research faculty, facilities, and students.
