Central Community College – Hastings to Expand its Manufacturing, Welding Programs

June 13, 2018

Question: How does an educational institution answer the call of manufacturing companies looking to fill gaps in in their workforce?

Answer: It expands its programs for teaching advanced manufacturing and welding.

In a recent announcement, representatives from Central Community College in Hastings said the college will add 17,000 new, square feet onto the Hamilton Building and renovate another 15,000 square feet for instruction space.  It’s part of a major expansion project to add educational stations for its manufacturing and welding programs. The additional students taught will fill a gap in positions currently experienced by industrial-focused businesses.

“In addition to knowing 90 percent of their graduates stay in the area, Nebraska’s community colleges also understand what skillsets will be of benefit to area businesses and manufacturers,” said Mary Plettner, Nebraska Public Power District Economic Development Manager. “A majority of jobs are not found behind a desk. Nebraska’s companies need welders and employees ready to work in an advanced manufacturing setting.”

Local media promoted the expansion which is expected to cost $10.3 million but the College has already raised nearly half of that through reserves and gifts contributed to its endowment fund.  Completion of the entire renovation is slotted for the fall 2019.
