Newly-launched InternNE.com attracts record users in a couple weeks

FEBRUARY 1, 2013 (LINCOLN, NEB.)—Since going live in early January, the new and improved InternNE.com has recorded an upsurge of nearly 100 newly-registered students in just two weeks. The website can be accessed at www.InternNE.com.

InternNE Program Coordinator Allison Hatch only sees these numbers steadily rising.

"InternNE.com has become a top source for students statewide searching for competitive-wage internships in Nebraska, as well as hundreds of employers looking for top-notch intern candidates who may someday become excellent employees," Hatch said. "The site is easy to use, and I encourage both businesses and students log on to connect."

Currently, 1,000 students and nearly 300 employers are registered with InternNE.com…among these are former intern…now current ALLO Communications Human Resources Generalist Ellen Hughes.

Hughes' goal, upon college graduation, was to move back to western Nebraska where she grew up. The key was finding a fulfilling career that incorporated her leadership and business management background. That's where ALLO Communications in Imperial, Neb., came in. The company, which was receiving assistance through InternNE, recruited Hughes for a three-month internship. While she was new to, and basically unaware of, the program, she quickly realized its potential for helping students’ achieve their career goals.

During her internship, Hughes worked as a customer service representative, first learning the basics of the Telecommunications industry. She also got hands-on experience in Human Resources—an area that encompassed her true interests.

“They helped me shape my internship around opportunities that fit my strengths and desired career path,” Hughes said.

At the end of her three-month stint, Hughes was offered a full-time position in Human Resources with the growing company. "I never imagined my first job out of college would be on track with my intended career path, but thanks to InternNE, it became a reality," Hughes said.

Today, Hughes is instrumental in helping the company hire interns. Last year, the company supported three.

"This programs’ resources really help students, like myself, take the next step along their career paths, often by highlighting opportunities they may never have otherwise known about," said Hughes. "I can say that as a past participant and now a current employer of interns, I am a strong believer in InternNE's valuable resources, which are only a click away for employers and students alike."

While InternNE.com is free for employers to post paid internships and access student resumes, companies that further apply and are accepted to participate in the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s InternNE Grant Program may receive added benefits. Grants are available to companies creating qualified new internships, matching wages paid to interns between 40 percent (up to $3,500 per internship) and 60 percent (up to $5,000 per internship) depending on a business' location. A total 229 companies, to date, have taken advantage of the program.

Participating companies had filled 361 positions by the end of December 2012 and been approved and awarded funds for nearly 300 more internships.  An InternNE Program poll found that more than 50 percent of students who graduated at the completion of their internships were offered full-time positions with the companies where they interned, and more than 25 percent were hired for full-time positions with other companies.

To participate in the program, companies need to register on InternNE.com and submit applications, as well as create and post internship opportunities.

Senator Tom Carlson, Dist. 38, recently introduced legislative changes (LB476) that would increase the Program's accessibility, reduce some previously cumbersome constraints for participants, andincrease the 40/60 percent matching wage availability to an across-the-board 75 percent thereby making it a more attractive, impactful option for all participating companies.
