Production Begins at Ethanol Plant Near Albion

VeraSun Energy Corporation, one of the nation's largest ethanol producers, announced in October the startup of its fifth production facility located near Albion. The Albion facility, expected to produce 110 million gallons per year, was purchased from ASAlliances Biofuels, LLC, in August. The plant, served electrically by Cornhusker Public Power District, will process approximately 39 million bushels of corn and produce 350,000 tons distillers grains for livestock feed annually.

"We have been impressed with the Albion community and the interest in VeraSun resulting from the recent acquisition," said Don Endres, VeraSun chairman and CEO. "The community and its leadership have been supportive of the plant and recognize the economic impact it will provide, in addition to the environmental benefits created from using ethanol," he said.

Local officials are also hoping to maximize the plant’s local impact. "The Boone County Development Agency is marketing nearby industrial sites for potential spin-off businesses," said Timothy Brazeal, the organization’s executive director. The plant employs approximately 60people, and Brazeal cited economic models that project dozens more jobs added in related industries, along with increases in household incomes and grain prices. "We are seeing some significant and rapid growth in several sectors," Brazeal said.
