  Ord, the county seat of Valley County, is located in Central Nebraska. The city is served by Nebraska Highways 70 and 11. Ord is 63 miles northwest of Grand Island and 71 miles northeast of Kearney. Ord is centrally located within 30 miles of Calamus Reservoir, Sherman Reservoir and Davis Creek Reservoir.

The airport is scheduled for renovation in 2008. The runway will be lengthened by 220 feet. The airstrip will be widened from 60 to 75 feet and the lighting on the runway will be pilot controlled.

A 10" water main is available on the west property line of the Mortensen Family Industrial Site. The water capacity available at the site is 2,200 gallons per minute at 56 P.S.I. Potable water does not require any treatment. The City of Ord is proud of its water quality and quantity. Ord's water tests have never been out of compliance with the requirements of the Nebraska Dept. of Health and Human Services. There has never even been an S.O.C. or V.O.C. detected in any of the City of Ord's three wells. Commercial: Minimum 5,000 gallons - $15.00 quarterly with minimum to be payable at $5.00 per month. All gallons in excess of 5,000 - $.95 per 1,000 gallons to be paid quarterly. A 10" sanitary sewer main is available on the west property line of the Mortensen Family Industrial Site. The Ord wastewater plan operates in compliance with the permit. The seward treatment plant is limited to grinding, aeration, and grit removal. The influent is then pumped to the city's four lagoon ponds totaling 44.2 acres. While in the lagoons, the wastewater is naurally treated then dischared into the North Loup River. Commercial: Minimum 5,000 gallons - $12.00 quarterly with minimum to be payable at $4.00 per month. All gallons in excess of 5,000 - $.75 per 1,000 gallons to be paid quarterly.

Special District, totaling $0.205377 per $100 of actual value, for real property taxes is a combination of levy's for the library, township, Central Community College, airport, Ag Society, ESU, and NRD. The city of Ord also collects a 1.5% sales tax. The 1% is used for economic development and the 0.5% is used to pay the general obligation portion of the downtown Ord renovation project.

The City of Ord updated their comprehensive plan and adopted new zoning regulations in 2003. The City of Ord paved 19 blocks of streets in 2003 and paved another 15 blocks in 2005. The downtown business district was completely renovated in 2007 to include new streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, some utilities, and historic lighting.

The city of Ord has recently renovated Auble's Pond, located in Ord's Bussell Park. Thanks to Nebraska Game & Parks, the pond now includes a dock and several types of fish. A 1-mile concrete trail was completed in 2004. The Ord trail starts at Auble's Pond and continues north to the Lower Loup NRD Arboretum.

In 2003, Valley County received a grant from the State of Nebraska to assist with owner-occupied housing rehabilitation. Approximately 32 homes were renovated with those funds. In 2006, Valley County was awarded a grant for a down-payment assistance grant to assist low-to-moderate income residents purchase homes in Valley County. Ten first time homebuyers have been assisted with these funds. A countywide housing study was completed in 2008 to identify housing needs. The City of Ord will be submitting an application for owner occupied rehab funds in 2008.
