Lawrence is a part of the South Central Nebraska Unified School District which involves: Lawrence, Nelson, Sandy Creek, Guide Rock and Superior. In 2006 the Lawrence and Nelson school districts merged. Located in Lawrence is the Elementary K-6 and a Lawrence Early Learning Center, along with the Sacred Heart Elementary K-8. The High School is located in Nelson. Nearest Colleges: Central Community College-Hastings and Hastings College-25 miles, University of Nebraska at Kearney-69 miles and University of Nebraska at Lincoln-115 miles. Central Community College has a distance learning center located at the Lawrence/Nelson Elementary. Numerous credit and non-credit classes are offered. Lawrence is lucky enough to have the Liberty Cove Recreational Area located only 4 miles from town. This spring fed lake is 2 miles west of Lawrence, on HWY 4, 2 miles south and 1/4 west, in Webster County. The area of 36 acres of water and 247 acres of land is owned and operated by the Little Blue Natural Resources District. Recreational opportunities include hiking trails, shelters, restrooms, beach, picnicking, grills, camping, playground, water well, house riding trail, arboretum and small game hunting, bird watching. (Boats less than 5 HP) Winter activities include sledding, skating and snowmobling. Water quality of the lake is considered excellent due to many natural springs. The lake is stocked with bluegill, bass, catfish and northern pike. Another hot spot for recreation is the Lawrence Country Club. It is located 3 3/4 miles west of Lawrence along HWY 4. This 9 hole sand green course is famously known for the "Cow Chip Open" an annual two round tournament held the second Sunday in June along with the High School Alumni Banquet. The Women's version of the tournament is held the weekend before. The course also has a spacious club house, numerous cart sheds for local members and a busy calendar of events for all starting in April and running through September.
