  Imperial, the county seat of Chase County, is located in the southwest corner of Nebraska. Our community is located 24 miles east of the Colorado border and 39 miles north of the Kansas border. Imperial intersects with U.S. Highway 6 and Nebraska State Highway 61. Imperial is located 50 miles south of I-80, 95 miles north of I-70 and 90 miles east of I-76.

The Imperial Airport is equipped with an ASOS (Automated Surface Observation System) weather reporting system and NDB (Non-Directional Beacon) equipment. The concrete runway is 100 foot wide and 5,000 foot in length. In addition to the new terminal building completed in 2008, there are 18 hangers available for rent and fueling capabilities.

Additional Comments: The City of Imperial purchases electricity from the Imperial Public Power District (IPPD). The City owns and operates a 4,160 wye distribution system with 8 feeder circuits. The current substation has a capacity of 12,500 kva. To ensure reliability and minimal disruption of electrical service IPPD has two backup electrical feeds. One backup feed is from Highline Electric Association in Holyoke, CO which is serviced by Tri-State Electric. The second backup feed is from Southwest Public Power District (SWPPD) in Palisade, NE. SWPPD is serviced by the Nebraska Public Power District. Due to IPPD’s switching capabilities the City of Imperial enjoys reliable electrical service with minimal disruptions.

The sanitary sewer system is owned and operated by the City of Imperial. The majority of the sewer lines vary from 8 to 15 inches. The system has two lift stations that are 35 FT deep. The City operates the municipal wastewater lagoon oxidation pond, which provides primary and secondary wastewater treatment. The lagoons have an average daily load of 150,000 gallons per day with a total capacity of 200,000 gallons per day.

The city is continually investing in the replacement and upgrade of Imperial’s infrastructure. Recent projects have included new sidewalks, curb and gutter, new water mains and upgraded storm drainage systems. Chase County Schools (CCS) piloted the Career Academy program in 2008-2009 in partnership with Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC). The Career Academy provides students the opportunity to attend a 5th year of high school and graduate with both high school diploma and associate’s degree. Opened in 1991, CCS features large classrooms, well equipped areas for music, drama and art, a 350-seat auditorium, media center and exceptional athletic facilities. To accommodate the growing number of students both adult and Career Academy, MPCC expanded its Imperial Extended Campus in 2009.
