  Gering is located in the southwestern corner of the State of Nebraska, in close proximity to Colorado's Front Range. State Highway 71 is a N/S 4-lane highway designated as part of the Heartland Expressway. Interstate 80 is 40 miles south of Gering & Interstate 25 is 80 miles south & west.

Gering and the city of Scottsbluff are separated by the North Platte River, essentially forming one large community. Smaller surrounding towns and villages make up the rest of Scotts Bluff County. Gering's Fire Department has won the AK-SAR-BEN Outstanding Work Award 16 out of 20 years. The Rural Fire Department provides coverage outside the City. Gering's PD has state-of-the-art communications and surveillance equipment. The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Office is also located in Gering, which is the County Seat. Western Nebraska Community College offers Associates of Arts & Science transfer degree programs. Applied technology programs are also in place. A Distance Learning System allows students to complete Bachelor's and Master's Degrees through Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska. WNCC's Center for Business & Individual Training provides high quality, affordable seminars, workshops, & customized training programs. The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing prepares students for Bachelor's and/or Master's of Science Nursing Degrees, as well as Nurse Practitioner Certification. Over 80% of nursing graduates find employment in the immediate region. Regional West Medical Center's School of Radiologic technology is a two-year program and is the only radiographer education program in Western Nebraska. Gering has several beautifully landscaped parks, as well as lighted tennis courts, baseball and softball fields, and soccer fields. Monument Shadows Golf Course lies at the base of the Scotts Bluff National Monument. Additional golf courses, including a private course at the Scottsbluff Country Club, are available in nearby communities. Gering has two bowling alleys, a skate park, and an indoor roller skating rink, as well as multiple museums and historical sites. The YMCA is located between the communities of Scottsbluff and Gering and has a large indoor swimmming pool, as well as many other recreational amenities.

Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff is an acute care hospital serving western Nebraska, eastern Wyoming, northeastern Colorado, and southwestern South Dakota. It is one of only three Level II Trauma Centers in Nebraska. More than 40 medical specialities represented. Affiliated with the Heart Center of the Rockies and the Colorado Neurological Institute. Our Community:Gering is situated at the base of the Scotts Bluff National Monument, on the Oregon & Mormon Trails. The area is rich with history of the west. Gering is the County Seat of Scotts Bluff County, whose population for 2008 was almost 37,000. The area is agricultural, with no traffic congestion.
