  Geneva, the county seat of Fillmore County is located in south-central Nebraska, 36 miles north of the Kansas border on U.S. Highway 81 (Pan American Highway). Interstate 80 is 20 miles north. A network of U.S. and State highways within the county allow easy access to larger population centers including: Lincoln, 50 miles; Omaha, 125 miles; Hastings, 50 miles; and York, 25 miles. All are easily accessed via U.S. Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 81.

The Nebraska Workforce Development Department in York shows that there is an available labor pool of 45,381 in the Geneva labor basin. (Clay, Fillmore, Hamilton, Jefferson, Nuckolls, Saline, Seward, Thayer, and York counties.) During the summer of 2009 a Labor Supply Factors and Labor Availability for the Fillmore County Labor Area was conducted. The study was prepared by NPPD. The basic conclusion is that the Fillmore County Labor Area and Fillmore County would be able to provide a significant number of dedicated and skilled workers to meet the needs of additional employers in the area. The Fairmont State Airfield is located four miles north of Geneva. This state-owned airfield has a 4,400 foot lighted, hard-surfaced runway. There are 30 private planes in hangars, some of which would be available for charter flights. The York Municipal Airport, 25 miles north, has a 4,400 foot lighted runway and a 3,600 foot concrete runway. Scheduled air service is available at the Lincoln Municipal Airport. This airport located 55 minutes east of Geneva offers passenger, air freight, and air express services.

Barge:

The Missouri River, on Nebraska's eastern border provides a water link to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, via the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers maintains a 9-foot deep, 300-foot wide channel for 735 navigable miles from Sioux City to the mouth of the Missouri River near St. Louis. The river is navigable approximately eight months of the year. It is free flowing with no locks or dams.

The municipal water system in Geneva is supplied by five wells with an average depth of 300 feet. Ground water is available for industrial uses. A 300-foot well will produce 500 gallons of water per minute. The quality of water in Geneva does not necessitate a water treatment plant. The water table has not changed during the past five years. The color of the water is clear and the hardness in grains per gallon is 11.6. Geneva has a municipal sanitary sewer system and a storm sewer system. The sewer treatment plant, constructed in 2006, is a sequencing batch reactor aerobic digester with a daily capacity of 350,000 gallons. This $5 million project was financed by sewer rates and grants from the USDA. The average daily flow is 145,000 gallons and the historic peak daily discharge is 190,000 gallons.

ADSL, DSL, and ISDN are available. Both digital and analog central office are on a fiber ring. There is T-1 and OC-12 transmission capabilities. Dark Fiber Solutions (DFS) provides 100 percent fiber optic-based IP transport services. Service bandwidths provided to customers range from 10Mbps to 10Gbps.

Fillmore County has 16 townships and is governed by a seven-member board of supervisors, each elected for a four-year term. Geneva, a city of the second class, has a mayor-city council form of government. Municipal officials include: Mayor, 4-year term; Council Members (6), 4-year term; City Administrator, appointed 1-year term; City Clerk, appointed 1-year term; Clerk Treasurer, appointed 1-year term; City Attorney, appointed 1-year term. Both City and County zoning ordinances are in effect. Law enforcement is provided by an inter-local agreement with the County Sheriff's department which is located in Geneva. The nearest Nebraska State Patrol office headquarters is located in Lincoln, Nebraska. There are 56 patrol officers headquartered in Lincoln; two are housed in Geneva.

Fillmore Central Public School serves both the communities of Geneva and Fairmont. Grades K-4 are housed at an elementary school in Geneva, the middle school(5-8) is in Fairmont, and the high school(9-12)site is in Geneva. A full range of business, vocational agriculture, consumer economics, and industrial technology is offered. Adult educational programs are offered in the high school by satellite dish and distance learning. Grace Lutheran School, a private, parochial school sponsored by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church, has been in Geneva since 1948 and serves students K-8 grades. The Fillmore Central School is part of a consortium of seven school districts to provide education for high needs special education students. The program is housed mostly in the Fillmore Central School District. A wide range of college courses are available in the community through Southeast Community College, Peru State College, and others. The Geneva Activities and Education Department coordinates these programs. The Youth Rehabilitation & Treatment Center (YRTC) in Geneva is the only state-operated correctional facility for delinquent females in the state of Nebraska and is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. The YRTC provides treatment programming for female youth under the age of 19 who have been adjudicated as delinquent by the various courts of Nebraska. The YRTC-Geneva education program is accredited by the Nebraska Department of Education as a special purpose school and offers a full schedule of academic classes along with GED programming and independent living programs.

Geneva has one large park covering two city blocks and four mini-parks throughout the city. Facilities in the main park include picnic tables, grilling stands, playground equipment, swimming pool, tennis courts, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, lighted baseball and softball fields, rest rooms, shelters, a log cabin, and band stand. Boy's Pond, a city owned stocked fishpond, is within the city limits. Hidden Hills is a nine-hole golf course with grass greens and mature trees. Located on the west edge of Geneva the course includes a club house and pro shop and is open to the public. Organized recreation programs include midget football, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, softball, baseball, swimming, track, tennis, golf, 4-H, and scouts. The Geneva Arts Council in cooperation with the Nebraska Arts Council brings in musical and drama performances and other cultural events for the community. A first run movie is shown each week at the historic Rialto Theater. The theater is run by volunteers. Special events in the community include the County Fair, Home and Garden Show, Summer Celebration, banquets honoring Veterans, Christmas Carnival, Farmer's Market and a host of other activities. Lone Star Recreation Area a new recreation area is located 18 miles southeast of Geneva on Road 24. The 160 acre area includes a 75-acre spring fed lake, 12 RV camper pads, boating, swimming, and fishing.

The Fillmore County Hospital is an acute care hospital licensed by the State of Nebraska and approved Medicare and Medicaid. Six family practice physicians and on physician assistant make up the local active medical staff. Fillmore County Hospital has 70 sub-specialty physicians on courtesy/consulting staff. Diagnostic, X-ray, CT, MR, Mammography, nuclear bone scans, nuclear cariolite, ultrasound, and cardiac rehab are other hospital services. Specialty clinics are held on a regular basis.
