  Elgin is located in southern Antelope County in the northeast section of Nebraska. State Highways 14 and 70 intersect in the community. The community is located approximately 45 miles southwest of Norfolk, 86 miles north of Grand Island, 112 miles southwest of Sioux City, and 152 miles northwest of Omaha.

The Antelope County Airport, 11 miles north of Elgin, has a 3,200-foot paved and lighted runway and a 2,000-foot turf runway. Other facilities include fuel, hangars, and maintenance shop. Eighteen private planes are hangared there; none are available for charter. The Karl Stefan Memorial Airport at Norfolk, 45 miles southeast of Elgin, provides passenger, air freight, and air express services. Supplementary all-cargo service (car/truck) is available with departures daily. Taxi service and car rental provide public ground transportation from the airport.

There is one park in Elgin covering five acres. Facilities include a swimming pool, kiddie pool, basketball court, tennis court, trailer parking and dump station, picnic shelters, playground equipment, showers, and restrooms. Vetch Days is a three-day celebration held annually in June. Activities have included a parade, carnival, cookout, 4-H livestock show, and car show. A craft fair is held in October, the St. Boniface Thanksgiving Bazaar on Thanksgiving Day, and a Christmas Fair is held in December. Recreation programs include softball, baseball, T-ball, swimming lessons, and spring and fall soccer.

The hospitals serving the Elgin area are: Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh, 11 miles north, Tilden Community Hospital, 17 miles northeast, Boone County Health Center, 22 miles south in Albion, and Faith Regional Health Services, 45 miles east in Norfolk. The two nursing homes in the area are the Neligh Nursing Center and Tilden Nursing Center.
