Decatur is one of nine communities along the "Lewis & Clark Highway 75 Scenic Byways", which extends from South Sioux City, Neb., to Blair, Neb. This stretch of highway was named after Lewis & Clark's journey which followed the Missouri River directly in the area surrounding the present day highway. This scenic stretch of highway is one of eight segments of highways throughout the State of Nebraska designated by Governor Mike Johanns in 1999 as the Official Nebraska Byways. These highway segments depict the State's diverse scenery, history and recreational opportunities for visitors and Nebraskans alike to discover and enjoy. The Nebraska Byways Program identifies significant alternate routes throughout the state that highlight Nebraska's diverse topography, history and landscapes. Selected byways will be included on future state highway maps and be marked with special highway signs along the route. In addition to being a scenic byway, transportation routes surrounding Decatur are conducive to business. Interstate 29 is 7 miles east of Decatur. US 275 and US 77 are just west of town. Decatur is also directly served by Highways 51 and 75.

The first Decatur school was held in the office of the Townsite and Ferry Company with Mrs. C.D. Canfield as the teacher. Mrs. Samuels, mother of Frank and Jesse James, taught one term of school in Decatur in 1862. A frame building was later erected and used until 1875. A larger two-story brick building, with a seventy-foot belfry, was built in 1875. The school bell from this building was preserved and used through the years and is now placed in front of the present school. In 1903, a two-story frame building was constructed on the present school site, and used until 1935. The present school building was erected in 1936, to which a larger gymnasium and lunch room facility were added in 1972. In 1984 the schools of Lyons, Neb., and Decatur were consolidated. The local facility provides schooling for elementary Decatur students and the other students from Decatur are bussed to Lyons.
