The City of Cambridge, Nebraska is laid out upon a charming plateau at the junction of the Republican River and Medicine Creek in Furnas County. The Medicine Creek State Recreation Area lies 10 minutes north of Cambridge. The city is served by Nebraska Highway 47 and US Route 6 & 34, which is the longest transcontinental highway spanning 3,652 miles from Provincetown, MA to Long Beach, CA. Cambridge is 65 miles south of Interstate 80 (exit near Kearney)and just over 70 miles to Interstate 70 in Kansas. Cambridge is 4 hours either way to Omaha, NE and Denver, CO. US Route 6 was Nebraska's first highway, built in 1911 along the Burlington Railroad Route. Today, this thoroughfare carries fiber optic lines and Cambridge's own Pinpoint Internet Service Provider has acquired the only access point into this line between Omaha and Denver.

Cambridge’s somewhat centralized location between McCook and Holdrege provides a regional labor market with diverse employment opportunities. The Furnas County Labor Basin includes Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Harlan, Phelps, and Red Willow Counties in Nebraska; and Decatur, Norton, and Phillips Counties in Kansas. The independent analysis by the Docking Institute (August 2004) assesses the available labor pool, which represents those who indicate that they are looking for employment or would consider changing their jobs for the right employment opportunity. The population of the Furnas County Labor Basin is estimated to be 50,019. Almost 24% of the total population (or 11,796 individuals) are considered to be part of the Available Labor Pool. Of the Available Labor Pool, it is estimated that 662 non-working and 1,821 working individuals are looking for new employment, while 1,601 non-working and 7,713 working individuals would consider new and/or different employment for the right opportunities. Almost 70% of the Available Labor Pool has at least some college experience and slightly more than 95% has at least a high school diploma. Also notable is a recent survey of Cambridge youth from 6th to 12th grades, 64% of the students indicated they desired returning to the community after college if employment or entrepreneurial opportunities were available.

The ease and proximity of transportation to Interstates 80 or 70 and U.S. Highways 83 and 183 make Cambridge a good centralized option for businesses using motor carrier transport. The traffic on our US Route 6 & 34 is significant, but does not negatively effect the quality of life in our community. The traffic does not warrant a stop light, but the community amenities do entice many passers by to stop and contribute to our local economy.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: Education is a very strong point for Cambridge. Our great state of Nebraska continually ranks in the top ten nationally for graduation percentage at about 89% of students annually and Cambridge ranks considerably higher than the state average with nearly 100%. The quality of our education is evident in the ACT testing. According to a 2003 national research study, Nebraska ranked first among the 12 states with a high percentage of students (70 percent or more) taking the ACT exam. Maine and Oregon ranked at the top nationally with a 22.6 score, however, fewer students in those states took the ACT. In Maine, 6 percent of the graduates participated and 12 percent in Oregon. Taking this data to the Cambridge level, I found we have continually ranked higher than the Nebraska average in the ACT scores and have about 10% more students taking the test each year than the state average. TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION: The school system was recently showcased in an article from the Tech & Learning Newsletter. "SWITCHING TO MACS IN CAMBRIDGE, NEBRASKA" This article is available on our Cambridge website www.cambridgene.org
