  Burwell, the county seat of Garfield County, is located in central Nebraska. The City is served by Nebraska Highways 11 and 91 and lies directly south of the Loup River. Burwell is located 78 miles northwest of Grand Island, Nebraska, and 86 miles north of Kearney, Nebraska. Garfield County is home to the Calamus Reservoir.

The special district tax assessment totaling $0.268616 per $100 of actual valuation for real property taxes includes levys for the Northeast Community College, Educational Service Unite #10, the Lower Loup Natural Resource District, the Burwell Rural Fire Department, the Garfield County/Frontier Fair Association, and the Burwell Airport Authority. The City of Burwell also collects a 1.0% City Sales Tax. One-third of the funds collected through this tax are deposited into an Infrastucture Fund used at the discretion of the Burwell City Council. In 2004, the city of Burwell completed a downtown revitalization project. The project included the repaving of all streets, sidewalks, and curbs in the downtown business district. Installing new traffic lights and pedestrian lights along the downtown business district and burying all electrical lines. Creating all new green space areas along the sidewalk area, including grass, plants, trees, and an underground watering system. The City of Burwell completed an extensive planning project in 2006 which included the updating of the city's Comprehensive Plan, an updated Affordable Housing Needs Study, the completion of a Blight/Substandard Determination Study and new zoning and subdivision regulations.

The Burwell community is blessed with every activity imaginable to the outdoor enthusiast. The North Loup River is located just north of the community next to the city park. The Calamus Reservoir and State Recreation Area is located 7 miles northwest of Burwell. With the reservoir and river located so close to the Burwell community, tourists and residents of the area can enjoy outdoor activities all year round. The reservoir offers a number of boat docks, 36 miles of public shoreline, sandy beaches and swimming area. Other recreational activities in the Burwell area include softball, volleyball, and horseshoes. Canoeing and tubing on the North Loup River are also enjoyed by tourists and local residents alike. The community has a movie theatre, swimming pool, picnic area, and a number of scenic drives to enjoy. Burwell is best known around the state as the "Outdoor Rodeo Capital of Nebraska", home of Nebraska's Big Rodeo. The outdoor rodeo is held annually on the last weekend of July. The annual rodeo offers 6 PRCA rodeo events; Canadian chuck wagon races, junior steer riding, the dinner bell derby, world champion clowns and bucking stock. Outdoorsmen can also enjoy the area's excellent hunting and fishing opportunities.
