  Alliance is located in the heart of the Panhandle of Western Nebraska. Highway 2 is a scenic highway through the Sandhills of Nebraska and it is also Alliance's main street running east and west. Highway 385 is on the west side of town. It is the major north-south route through the middle of the United States. Highway 87 runs north and south on the east side of town and hosts Carhenge. The major urban cities Alliance is close to are listed in the box to the right. Alliance is 53 miles northeast of Scottsbluff and Gering, 59 miles south of Chadron, and 78 miles north of Sidney.

Alliance places a high value on education with an excellent public school system, as well as an excellent elementary private school. The curriculum at the Alliance Public Schools is designed to provide students with a continuous education pattern regardless of which school they attend. The Public School System offers state-of-the-art hardware and software programs in their computer labs, special education classes available for students needing additional instructional services, and a Career Prospects Program to assist students in career making decisions. Alliance High School has a 96% graduation rate and about 72% of the students go on to higher education. St. Agnes Academy is a private school, kindergarten through eighth grade, with a preschool. The school is sponsored by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and is open to all denominations. St. Agnes has served the Alliance community since 1908.
